Bateman & Co

Something exciting has arrived at Boxpark Croydon.

If anything, Boxpark, is known for the sheer variety of food and drinks on offer and, so, this month, we’re excited to welcome Bateman & Co to the family. They’re bringing their traditionally British lunchtime menu to Croydon with heaps of exciting offerings, and so it was only right that we sat down with David Tester to find out more.

Tell us who you are and what you do.

In 1941, Jack Bateman started a company called Factory Canteens, in Croydon, with the simple aim of feeding workers who were supporting the war efforts in the factories, and to ensure that they were as productive as possible. As well as feeding them, Jack also provided a social hub with regular dance events and singing performances.

Fast forward to now and we have taken Jack’s ethos and reworked it so that it’s right for people of today. Bateman & Co. will still be ringing true to those original principles of serving honest, hearty, British food, in an industrial style setting. Also, don't forget to look out for some of the photos from back in the day when Jack first started out. We want to create a space that people feel relaxed in and truly become a part of the community.

Which song best sums up your brand?

Dolly Parton - 9 to 5, because A) who doesn’t love that song?! And B) we think we’re a great place to go for lunch for those working 9 to 5.

What can customers expect from you at Boxpark Croydon?

We’ll be serving up things like bubble and squeak for brunch and pie and mash for lunch, alongside homemade sandwiches and salads; and of course you can get a hearty brew or a great coffee too!

What is your favourite item from your menu?

Bubble and squeak! It's an old favourite, you just don’t see it around that much anymore, do you? For us, it’s the true hero of our menu.

Which other Boxpark Croydon trader would you recommend to customers?

We love Mud and ever since we tried their porridge, we just haven’t shut up about it!

What is your favourite thing about Croydon?

We absolutely love the 50p Building (The Threepenny Bit Building/The NLA Tower/No1 Croydon)! It's so iconic.

What would be your last meal on Earth and why?

Pie and mash with lashes and lashes of gravy. You'd want to pig out for the last time, wouldn't you? So, why not!
