Pop-up: Enak

13 Dec 21

We are delighted to welcome Enak into the unit 27 pop-up kitchen at BOXPARK Croydon.

Enak is new and exciting Indonesian food business. Enak means 'tasty' in Indonesian, and the recipes are inspired by recipes from a small village on the island of Flores.

We caught up with the team to find out more...

Tell us about yourself...

Enak is a business that was born out of a vision whilst laying in a hammock under a mango tree in the small village of Wairkoja in Indonesia. We had been staying with the local community for weeks at this point and couldn't bring ourselves to leave and continue on our planned travels through the nation due not only to the amazing hospitality of the locals, but also the daily trips to the market to cook with our hosts. Food is such a central part of the community there, and as we learnt more about this (through not only daily meals, but also parties, a wedding and a funeral as well as the markets and seeing small 'farms' on people's land surrounding their homes where many ingredients were growing) we were able to see and begin to understand the full passion of the locals.

As we were tasting these consistently delicious meals and snacks, it got us wondering why this cuisine was so under-represented in the UK compared with Thai or Indian cuisine, for example. We could envisage others at home loving the food, and a food business serving as a way to support the local community with profits being shared with the community for projects to benefit the locals.

Lockdown gave the perfect opportunity to see us bring this idea to life, and we spent time developing dishes and setting up ready for post-lockdown events. We have had huge success to date, securing slots at large festivals after only a few months trading at London markets. We have valued being able to engage with the public and have received great feedback for our food and also our drive and passion coming across on the stall. Customers are often intrigued at seeing a new cuisine that often they haven't tried before, and we've also had Indonesian customers enjoying seeing dishes from their home nation. We have big visions going forwards, including more ways to support and work with the local community in Wairkoja, and more menu developments.
