Spotlight: Nadia Jae

3 Feb 18

Nadia Jae has been bringing those Friday Feelings to Boxpark Croydon for a while now, so it was only right that we sat her down for a chat to find out more about her successes, her musical tastes and what lies ahead.

For those who don't know, tell us who you are and what you do.

My name is Nadia Jae and I'm Ky's mum. I'm also a DJ, Radio Presenter and I run a platform called CRnB. But most importantly I'm repping small selectors because I am 5'2; team petite!

When did you first realise that you wanted to be a DJ?

When my brain decided to play tricks on me and had me mixing songs in my head whilst I was listening to them on the radio. I went to raves and I could hear the track coming in before my friends could - super awks when you're singing lyrics that no one else can hear yet! I took a while to start because of the stigma against female DJs, but I made sure I learnt the craft as best as I could and just went for it.

Who are some of your biggest influences in music?

There's so many, I could honestly go on and on but early influences were Janet Jackson, New Kids on The Block (don't @ me!), Color Me Bad, Arrested Development, Tony, Toni, Tone and Michael Jackson. Then when I was old enough to buy music TLC, Destiny's Child, D'Angelo, Toni Braxton and an unhealthy obsession with Dru Hill. Lauryn Hill, Foxy Brown, and anything produced by Timbaland.

What have been some of your biggest event highlights so far?

Honestly, all of them. But playing at Fabric after a year of DJ-ing was pretty epic. Also, my first DJ booking abroad in Germany (where this picture was taken) was an amazing experience. I also did the festival runs with Nadia Rose and I played a small set at V Fest. I still have my artist pass!

What can visitors expect from your sets at Boxpark Croydon?

No talking I'm afraid, I'm not as loud as the other boys on the decks - ha ha. But I play a lot of UK, RnB and bashment and I've managed to get people singing out loud to Lumidee 'Never Leave You' so we were either super drunk or I caught the crowd that night. I love jungle and house too. So it just depends on how much time I've got. Expect me to be shelling in a tracksuit too.

What does 2018 have in store for you?

I have promised to be more creative so more events, more live shows and definitely more mixes on my socials.

Finally, what was the last song you listened to?

Aidonia - Yeah Yeah at 9am on a Thursday morning. My iTunes shuffle was on one!
