Spotlight: Nanny Outars

From street food markets to Boxpark Croydon, Nanny Outars has been bringing quality Guyanese dishes to people near and far. 

We sat down for a chat with Chris and Sam to find out what inspired their popular dishes and how they’re injecting a little fun into their delicious menu.

Tell us who you are and what you do.

We are Sam and Chris and we’re all about showcasing great Guyanese food and having fun times. 

We make and create fresh, handmade roti served with an array of unique Guyanese dishes. Everything is made from scratch, including all our sauces, pickles and our famous chili sauce. To add to the fun, we serve Guyana’s signature rum label, El Dorado and craft beer from local Croydon brewery, Signal.

The food and brand is inspired by Nanny Outar, our Guyanese grandma, who taught us all she knew about the greatness of Guyanese food!


What song sums up your brand?

Reggae Got Soul – Toots and the Maytals 

There is a real personal history behind the brand and the soulful, but fun, ska and reggae sounds ties in perfectly!


What can we expect from you at Boxpark Croydon?

You can expect great food, great service and plenty of fun. From the colourful design of our unit, to the outgoingjoyful staff, to the unique food on offer, we really want to put Guyanese cuisine on the map.


What is your favourite item on your menu?

The pork pepperpot roti is our showstopper. It is traditionally saved for Christmas in Guyana but we love serving it up every day. Marinated in the special cassareep and slow-cooked until fall-apart tender, its a beautifully rich, bitter-sweet dish. Top with our homemade pineapple salsa and chilli sauce and serve in our fresh roti and you have one epic dish!


Which other Boxpark Croydon trader would you recommend to customers?

Wine & Deli! Great staff and quality food. 


What is your favourite thing about Croydon?

The people! We’ve had such a great response from the locals who have come in and tried our food. They’re excited about the boxpark and love a good chat.


If you were on death row, what would be your last meal and why?

The easy answer would be a fresh, warm, Nanny Outars Roti! If we have to pick something away from our own menu then it would be a big Sunday roast and a bottle of red wine, ideally in a pub with friends.
