Spotlight: Nicky Blackmarket

8 Dec 17

It’s about to get heavy at Boxpark Croydon; this weekend, we’re hosting the one and only Nicky Blackmarket and Fatman D for their all-day birthday festival. Tickets are flying out the door for what is guaranteed to be an unforgettable event, filled with drum and bass all stars, both old and new. We caught up with Mr Blackmarket himself to get the lowdown on what you can expect this Saturday and some personal highlights from his legendary career.

How do you feel looking back over your career, so far?

It has been brilliant and I’m so happy to still be able to do what I love doing. There’s been so many unexpected turns and switches along the way but it feels great to still be so involved.

What first inspired you to get into DJ-ing and music production?

I remember getting into music from a very young age. I would say that my mum has probably been the biggest influence on me, musically. Growing up with that raw passion for music just naturally made me want to get into production and then the DJ-ing aspect was just part and parcel.

What have been some of your favourite events over the years?

There’s been too many to mention but there were a couple of standout moments this year that I’ll never forget. Firstly, having my kids see me play at Glastonbury was incredible, and then I literally shut down Boomtown’s Raveyard Arena with Fatman D!

How often do you get to be on the other side of the decks, and which events do you like to go to?

I don’t get a chance to go to many events because I’m usually always playing but, when I do go, I like to get to the event early to listen to the other DJs, the up and comers.

What can ticket-holders expect at your Birthday Festival?

Yes! Well, it’s going to be a different experience as it’s an all-day event in the winter but we’ll deliver a selection of top tunes, both old and new, to really get the crowd going. We’re all excited about it. Bring it on!

Who should everyone be listening to right now?

There is so much great music out there at the moment. The UK is actually killing it right now but I’d have to say that if you pick any DJ or producer from our line up, you definitely will not be disappointed.

What are you NYE plans?

It’s going to be absolutely full-on for New Year’s Eve. I’m starting in Bristol with United Sounds and then it’s onto One Nation in Bournemouth with Drumsound & Bassline Smith. After that, I head straight to Birmingham for Raveology and then back to London for Moondance at Scala and Breakin Science at the Coronet. It’s gonna be big!

Finally, what was the last song you listened to?

The last tune I listened to was Everybody Loves the Sunshine by Roy Ayers.
