Spotlight: Oatopia

19 Sep 17

Oatopia have been doing away with the humdrum of the morning commute by injecting happiness into your first meal of the day. The new kid on the block, at Boxpark Croydon, have been serving up some of the freshest, tastiest and healthiest treats in town, and so, naturally, we wanted to find out more. We caught up with Sophie Coleman to get the lowdown on what makes Oatopia so special.

Tell us who you are and what you do.

Oatopia has always been a family affair. It started life in 2012 with Tamar Coleman, husband Peter, and two daughters Yasmin and Sophie. It’s concept was sparked by a shared love for healthy eating and lifestyle. Inspired by oats we set out to make healthy and wholesome food available at events and festivals around the UK, and have now opened as a permanent site at Boxpark Croydon!

Our menu as our name suggests is very oat centric with porridge and flapjacks at it’s heart, plus vegan, gluten and wheat-free food and drink. There is something for everyone.

What song best sums up your brand?

We can't pick just one!

We Are Family’ by Sister Sledge, ‘Master Blaster (Jammin)’ by Stevie Wonder and ‘Feel Like Jumping’ by Marica Griffiths is our vibe!

What can customers expect from you at Boxpark Croydon?

Our menu is a porridge lovers dream come true. We have a set menu of different porridge combos to choose from, freshly made with either dairy or vegan coconut milk, plus a range of over 30 different unique flavours of artisan flapjacks and vegan energy bombs, all of which we hand make at our bakery in East Sussex!

Also on the menu, we have a range of oat and fruit smoothies, a natural yoghurt parfait, our delicious bircher muesli and, at Boxpark only, a range of toasted bagels. We serve coffee as well using roasted beans from Red Roaster. Oat milk lattes are our new favourite thing!

What is your favourite item from your menu?

Ooh…Our best sellers in the flapjack department are our vegan breakfast bar, salted caramel flapjack and almond bakewell flapjack, but it’s a close contest with peanut butter; we are seeing a lot of love for our Banutty porridge and our classic smoked salmon and cream cheese toasted bagel as well.

Personally, if I had to choose it would be the cacao energy bomb as it’s vegan, made using natural healthy ingredients with no added sugar, and is super chocolatey!

Which other Boxpark Croydon trader would you recommend to customers?

We love Cookdaily, and the pizza at Arancina is delicious.

what is your favourite thing about Croydon?

Aside from Boxpark, we love Croydon's diversity. We serve people that come from all parts of the world and all walks of life. There is a certain rawness to Croydon too. It’s in south London but has it’s own personality and vibe.

What would your last meal on Earth be and why?

A homemade veggie roast with Yorkshire puds and the crispiest roast spuds, followed by a classic crumble and custard, all accompanied with a bottle of red (as who wants to go out sober!)

Oatopia are open along the George Street entrance of Boxpark Croydon - you can follow them online on Facebook, Twitter and Instagram for more oat-y goodness.
