Spotlight: Shy FX

17 Nov 17

One of our biggest events of the year - Rum ‘n’ Riddim - is just over a week away and, to get you excited for what lies ahead, we had a chat with our special headliner, Shy FX!

It's been over 20 years since your breakthrough hit 'Original Nuttah' cemented your arrival. How do you feel looking back over your career so far?

I’m really blessed to be able to do what I love, it’s the only thing I’ve ever wanted to do, it’s been quite a journey, which is still evolving of course! I think if you can do what you love for the most part of your career, whatever that is, then you’ve done quite well in life!

Who have been some of your favourite collaborators over the years?

I don’t have a favourite, there’s been so many talented people that have passed through the studio it would be impossible to name them all. It’s been a pleasure to work with so many talented people over the years, I’ve learnt so much from each individual, but one of the most important people in my career has been T Power, he taught me so much in terms of production and mix downs, all the key elements to being a good producer.

How often do you get to be on the other side of the decks and what kind of events do you prefer to go to?

Not often enough, but when I do I go try and make sure I attend Deviation, it’s always a vibe. Benji know’s how to throw a decent party.

What can visitors expect from you at the Rum 'n' Riddim takeover at Boxpark Croydon?

Dubs, dubs and more dubs!

Who should everyone be listening to right now?

Kojey Radical. He’s an artist that the UK scene needs right now, he’s totally in his own lane and is making music that differs to any other artist to come out of the UK in a minute. Lyrically, he’s a G and the production on his album was sick.

If you had to pick a favourite from your own tracks, which would it be?

My favourite is always the last track I made, but it hasn’t been released yet so you’ll have to stay tuned…

Finally, what was the last song you listened to?

Shade by IAMDDB is a banger.
