Spotlight: DJ Nate

7 Dec 17

Last month, VP Records brought the launch of their 'Strictly the Best' reggae compilation to Boxpark Croydon. We caught up with DJ Nate to get his take on the night and his own personal musical influences, as well as who you should be listening to right now.

For those who don't know - tell us who you are and what you do?

I am DJ Nate, a DJ and event organiser from London.

What did you make of the Strictly the Best launch party, last month?

It had the sickest vibes! We had dancers and performers and all of the sounds under the dancehall and reggae umbrella being played all day. Myself and VP records made sure we delivered some real entertainers. Everyone was up and dancing and having a great time. We made sure they left Boxpark knowing all about the Strictly the Best compilation brand.

Who have been some of your biggest musical influences?

Musically, I’ve been exposed to many different styles from a young age, thanks to my surroundings. One day I’d be with my mum, listening to the latest reggae, dancehall & R&B, then the next with my dad, listening to jungle & UKG tape packs!

On the dancehall scene it was all about Stone Love, I used to listen to their audio tapes and how they had an ear for selecting tunes! UK wise, So Solid Crew and Heartless to name just a few.

When did you first realise you wanted to become a DJ?

I was with friends and we downloaded an app called ‘VirtualDJ’ as I wanted to mix together some tracks to see how it sounded. Some of my closest friends heard, one of which was a club promoter at the time, and he forced me to appear at his club night. I had a few hours to think of a DJ name, and one week to learn how to DJ on CDJs and proper equipment.  After being thrown into the deep end at a popular club night, I fell in love with it and knew it’s what I wanted to dedicate my time to. Having control over peoples emotions and making sure they have a good time is one of my biggest motivations.

Who should everyone be listening to right now?

Right now the UK scene is the in thing! People like Dave, MoStack, J Hus, Stefflon Don, Kojo Funds, Yxng Bane and many more are running the scene.

Dancehall wise, Alkaline, Aidonia, Popcaan, Vybz Kartel, and my team have an artist called K More, who is doing very well on the underground dancehall Scene. He’s one to look out for in the coming months!

What other events have you got lined up?

I run a plethora of events, but my Bashment Party brand is something I would say to look out for! We’re going on a UK wide tour in early 2018, taking over a few concert arenas in Birmingham, Leeds, Manchester, Bristol, and if you liked the vibe at the STB launch you’ll love it.

Along with this, I’m one of the headline DJs at a festival called ‘Island Breakout’ in Kavos in 2018. That’s one to keep your eyes out for.

Finally, what was the last song you listened to?

Aidonia - Yeah Yeah
